Trees
When I first moved to this beautiful property in 1997
some of my neighbours tried to convince me to cut
down the trees so that I would have a better view of
the ocean.

But trees have always been sacred to me. They are
like a mother to me. I love trees.
I am a 100% tree hugger!!!
I can hear them scream when they are being cut
down. I declined all invitations to cut down trees.

And then six years later, in 2003, Hurricane Juan
came through and did the job. The wrath of the
hurricane  actually increased the property value
because now it offered a most magnificent view of
the ocean and surrounding wetlands.

Over the following years many tree tops have broken
off and unless they are a threat to a building or a
car, I leave them or their stumps standing.

I know old trees serve as great perches and homes
for many creatures...

I am dedicating this video to all trees everywhere
and in particular to the two trees which appear in so
many of my photos.
The Tree and The Rock
a short story by Elizabeth van Dreunen
on October 16, 2010

The rock loved the tree above it. The little tree filled the air
with oxygen and fragrant ethers that nourished the tiny fragile
ecosystem they shared high on a cliff above the ocean.

The rock and the tree had been together over a hundred
years or even possibly thousands of years.

A man arrived one day and decided that he would build a
house near this fragile ecosystem so that he could have a
good view of the ocean.

He hired a contractor to bulldoze the tree and the rock off the
cliff so that his view would not be obscured.

The rock and the tree became landfill for this man's neighbour
who lived further up the headland.

Tiny seeds that had fallen into the crevices of the rock long
ago, eventually began to sprout.

And several generations later, the tree and the rock were
reunited on the edge of the cliff overlooking  the ocean.
